Musical Myths I was Taught

Classical music good, jazz bad.

One previous— highly gifted — student in my first teacher’s studio had become (gasp!) a jazz musician. His name was not spoken.

Playing from score good, by ear bad.

And improvising was especially bad.

Piano technique is a single monolithic thing.

And it’s all about fingers.

Slow practice good, fast practice bad.

Fast is superficial, and borders on immoral (just as many people view slow and fast thinking).
